Escuela Bilingüe Internacional (EBI) is proud to present a private showing of Maquilapolis, produced by Sergio de la Torre and Vicky Funari. De la Torre, the proud father of an EBI student, will be on hand to provide post-showing insight into the making of the film, along with answering questions posed by guests. Please join us for this very special EBI cultural event, the first in a series of events with which we hope to illustrate the richness of the Latin@ contribution to the world of art, film and literature. A brief look at the film: Carmen and Lourdes work in Tijuana’s maquiladoras, the multinationally-owned factories which came to Mexico for its cheap labor. Each day these factory workers confront labor violations, environmental devastation and urban chaos -- life on the frontier of the global economy. In MAQUILAPOLIS, Carmen and Lourdes reach beyond the daily struggle for survival to organize for change: Carmen takes a major television manufacturer to task for violating her labor rights. Lourdes pressures the government to clean up a toxic waste dump left behind by a departing factory. As they work for change, the world changes too: a global economic crisis and the availability of cheaper labor in China begin to pull the factories away from Tijuana, leaving Carmen, Lourdes and their colleagues with an uncertain future. Carmen y Lourdes trabajan en las maquiladoras de Tijuana, las fábricas multinacionales que vinieron a México por su disponibildad de mano de obra barata. Cada día estas trabajadoras de la maquila enfrentan violaciones laborales, devastación ambiental y caos urbano – la vida en el frente de la economía global. En MAQUILAPOLIS, Carmen y Lourdes van más allá de la lucha diaria por la supervivencia, organizando a sus comunidades para lograr cambios positivos en sus vidas: Carmen levanta una demanda en contra de una fábrica de ensamblaje de televisiones por violar sus derechos de trabajo. Lourdes ejerce presión sobre el gobierno para sanear una fábrica abandonada repleta de desechos tóxicos. Mientras que ellas trabajan para lograr cambios, el mundo cambia también: con una crisis económica global y la disponibilidad de una mano de obra más barata en China, los trabajos de la maquila empiezan a desaparecer de Tijuana, dejando a Carmen, a Lourdes y a sus colegas con un futuro incierto.

Escuela Bilingüe Internacional (EBI) is an independent co-educational day school in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. EBI offers a Spanish-English dual language program, extending from pre-K through second grade, with plans to extend through 8th grade as the current students grow. Students at EBI will become fully literate in Spanish and English, and will develop conversational skills in a third language.
EBI is committed to maintaining high standards for all its students, in all areas of education. We believe that when learning is stimulating, fun and developmentally appropriate, children gain the motivation to become self-directed, life-long learners.

Escuela Bilingüe Internacional es una escuela independiente mixta en el este del área de la Bahía de San Francisco. En la actualidad, EBI ofrece un currículo bilingüe inglés-español, que se inicia con el nivel preescolar y sigue hasta el segund grado. Con la apertura de cada nuevo año escolar, y en base al crecimiento de nuestros estudiantes, la escuela añadirá un nuevo nivel hasta alcanzar el octavo grado, nuestra meta académica. En EBI, cada estudiante recibirá instrucción académica en español e inglés y desarrollará la capacidad necesaria para conversar en un tercer idioma.
EBI se compromete a mantener un alto estándar para todos sus estudiantes en cada una de las materias del currículo educativo.
